What's for lunch?

Venezuelan soup...Mexican style! I made a traditional Venezuelan soup with beef and vegetables (onion, garlic, cilantro, bell pepper, carrots, potatoes, & yellow squash) in a clear broth. Add lemon, red chili sauce, cream, and corn tortillas for the Mexican flair! Delicious!

So, I'm hungry.

Especially for hot fresh tortillas. It's been so long since I had them fresh off the pan at my friend's house.

I think that corn tortillas are the best fresh from the tortilleria...but really good heated up at home, too! We discovered that there is a tortilleria just around the corner from us, but haven't figured out their hours yet...I need to, it's a good chance not only to get tortillas, but to meet neighbors, too!

In the village we used to live in when I was a child, my friend's mom would make them. My friend and I would stand and watch as she would grab them and flip them to cook evenly.

Oh they tasted good fresh and hot. And of course corn tortillas! I can't even find corn ones in the stores here.

Oh, yum! I'll be they were SO good that way! One time, a tribal lady made us fresh flour tortillas up in the mountains...heavenly!

They didn't have tortillas in Colombia or Venezuela (their equivalent is the arepa), although they are beginning to sell some flour ones here and there...most people there use the word "tortilla" for a Spanish-style omlette (sp?), so they get confused about Mexican food...down south they make tortillas from blue corn, that sounds interesting as well!

Oh, and Sarah mentioned this morning (for like the 10th time) that she really wants to get a REAL tortilla press. We'll have to send you some money the next time you come back to the states if you could pick one up for us. The really simple wooden ones, you know?
